You will also need to determine if you can port your number and if your existing device is compatible with a different wireless carrier. Typically, after you finish getting service with a different carrier, your existing carrier should finalize or end your service automatically. However, you may want to check to make sure that your AT&T service has been terminated. It's common for customers to switch between carriers. One carrier may have a better plan than the other or offer something that the other doesn't. However, there are many reasons why a customer may decide to switch to another carrier. This is no different for AT&T wireless customers as well. However, when an AT&T wireless customers decides to switch carriers, there are steps that he or she should follow.

Select Your Carrier

Of course, before you switch your AT&T wireless plan to another carrier, you need to decide which carrier you'd like to get service with. Most people will do their research and tie down the wireless company they'd like to have service with. However, consider the fine print as well. Can you keep the same phone? Will there be any fees for switching? Will you have to sign an extensive contract? These are all viable questions.

Keep All Your Information Close

The next step in the process is to gather all of your information. The information you will need is your account number, AT&T password or pin, and your ESN or MEID number located behind the battery on the interior of your phone. When you call your new wireless service provider you will need to provide all of this information.

Decide On Your Switching Method

There are several different ways to switch your AT&T wireless service to another carrier. You can call the service provider directly, visit the wireless retailer, or do it yourself online. Either way, the information you need will be the same.

Contact the New Wireless Provider

Next, you will need to contact the new wireless service provider and let them know that you would like to switch your AT&T wireless service. If you plan on porting your number you will need to let your new carrier know. Most of the time this is possible, however there are some situations where it might not be possible. Also, you should be able to keep the same phone if it's compatible. However, if it's not, you may be able to get a discount, refund, or credit on your bill if you switch phones. Every carrier will be different, however.

Other Considerations...

Your AT&T wireless carrier may have to unlock your SIM card or phone. Also, some devices wont be compatible with all carriers. Regardless, make sure you back up all the data on your phone and don't cancel your AT&T service until you have finished setting up your new wireless service.
