Introduction

Are you an authorized user (primary or secondary) of an AT&T wireless account? Then you can change your account's primary contact. However, like other AT&T accounts, you need to first disable the wireless lock before you can make changes to your account. The only way to turn it off is via the app, so make sure you have it downloaded to your phone or tablet. If you're thinking of changing the primary contact info for your AT&T wireless account, read this article for the step-by-step instructions.

Log In to the App

Note that you can only use the app to turn off Wireless Account Lock. Download the app and sign in to your AT&T account. Also, make sure that the app is installed on a device with your wireless account. Otherwise, it will not be possible to turn it off.

Go to the Second Tab and Select Services

Select Mobile Security

Scroll to Wireless Account Lock

Select Continue and choose the AT&T wireless account to unlock. To turn it off, simply swipe to unlock. Don't lock the wireless account or you will not be able to make any updates to your primary contact.

Are you using multiple devices for your wireless account? You only have to make the change once, and then you'll be able to update the primary account. Note that hotspots on a data plan, as well as standalone tablets, also use Wireless Account Lock.

Once the Wireless Account Lock is turned off, the next step is to update your primary contact. How do you do this? Check out the next step.

Sign In to Your AT&T Account on the Website

If you're not logged in yet, enter your user ID and password. If you don't remember your ID, tap on Forgot user ID and follow the on-screen prompts to recover your account.

Go to Your Profile

Once you're on your profile, you need to go to your linked accounts and select Edit to update your primary contact, such as phone or email. Follow the prompts and check the confirmation email afterward. If you don't find it in your inbox, try checking your spam folder.

For AT&T wireless service, expect to receive a verification code to confirm the changes. If you have multiple accounts with AT&T, make sure all of them have the same email, phone and addresses. So, if you updated your wireless account, ensure you also update your other accounts.

Conclusion

If family members share your AT&T wireless account, consider adding them as authorized users, so they can also update the primary info. Secondary users can do most of the things a primary user can do, and this includes viewing and paying bills, managing add-ons, and updating the primary info on the accounts. Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for AT&T Wireless Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
