How Do I Cancel My AT&T Wireless Service?

In a nutshell: If you're planning to cancel your AT&T wireless service, consider doing so at the end of your billing cycle. Keep in mind that canceling mid-cycle still requires full payment for the month. If your line has an unpaid installment plan, you'll need to settle the balance before canceling. Canceling before your service commitment ends may also incur an Early Termination Fee (ETF). For a smooth process, check out our guide, and we'll cover device returns as well.

Introduction

If you're planning to cancel your AT&T wireless service, consider doing so at the end of your billing cycle. Keep in mind that canceling mid-cycle still requires full payment for the month. If your line has an unpaid installment plan, you'll need to settle the balance before canceling. Canceling before your service commitment ends may also incur an Early Termination Fee (ETF). Call AT&T Directly

You can easily cancel your wireless service by calling the customer service hotline. Have your account details ready, as the representative will need them to verify your account.

Chat With an ATT Representative

Another option to cancel the service is by using the chat feature on the website.

Just tap Chat and type in "cancel service". Then, just follow the prompts to cancel the service successfully. If you're unable to cancel the service via chat, we recommend calling AT&T directly. You may also want to visit an AT&T store to cancel your service in person.

Find at AT&T Store Near You

If you have other concerns and wish to cancel your wireless service in person, use this tool to find the closest AT&T store. Unlike AT&T's internet service, you can return a wireless device at an AT&T store, so bring your device with you if you intend to cancel. Don't forget to schedule an appointment before visiting the store.

You may also want to consider switching to AT&T prepaid instead of canceling your entire service with AT&T. To be eligible, your wireless account must be active for 30 days, and you must not have any past due amounts. Your wireless service must not also be a business account nor combined with other services. If you wish to switch to prepaid, do this four days after your billing period ends, so that AT&T can better calculate your monthly usage.

Return Your Wireless Device

After canceling your service, the next step is to return your wireless device to AT&T. Wireless devices must be returned within 14 days from cancellation to avoid paying a fee. You can visit an AT&T store to return your wireless device or call AT&T to request a prepaid shipping label. Once you have all the info, pack your device in its original packaging and include all components. Save the tracking number and ship your item via UPS. You can track your return here.

Reminder:

Before returning your device, ensure you have a backup for all your videos and photos. You also need to sign out of all cloud devices and disable the security features. If you have memory cards or SIMs installed, remove them from the device. Most importantly, delete all your personal data. Don't forget to also reset your device before sending it back to AT&T.

Conclusion

You don't have to cancel your wireless service is your device is stolen. Instead, you can either block the device or suspend the service. It's easy to suspend the device as you just need to log in to your account. Choose Manage Device or Manage Plan & Device - Options & Settings - Suspend Wireless Service - Suspend. Then follow the on-screen prompts to successfully suspend the service. Note that you won't be able to use the device once it's suspended. The only numbers you can call are 911 and 611. Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for AT&T Wireless Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
