What is an Early Termination Fee

An early termination fee is a charge billed to customers who cancel their service before completing their contract term. For example, if your service agreement is for two years and you cancel early, a termination fee will apply.

The exact amount depends on when you cancel, but it typically ranges from $58 to $325.

For business wireless services, if you cancel after the 30-day period, the early termination fee can be up to $750.

If you’re planning to cancel and want to check if you owe an early termination fee (ETF), sign in to your AT&T wireless account and go to Device Info.

In most cases, you won’t see an early termination fee if you’re on an installment plan. However, if you cancel before fully paying off your device, the remaining balance will still be due on your AT&T account.

Besides the early termination fee, note that you may need to pay other charges. And if your billing period has started, AT&T will ask you to pay for the entire period.

Visit a Store or Call AT&T Directly

If you still wish to cancel the service and want to know the total fees, consider reaching out to AT&T directly via phone or via a store near you. To find a store, just click Use My Location or use your zip code or city.

Those who prefer to call AT&T can call the 1-800 number. Please ensure you have your account number and PIN with you.

After canceling your service, don’t forget to return any rented equipment within 21 days and ensure it’s in good condition. If you fail to return it, you may be charged a non-return fee of up to $150.

Conclusion

Canceling your AT&T wireless service may come with costs, depending on the type of plan you have. If you’re under a service agreement, you may need to pay a portion of the early termination fee. Customers on installment plans won’t typically have an early termination fee, but any remaining device balance will still be due upon cancellation. If you're only away for a few months, we suggest suspending your account as well. You may also have the option to suspend your AT&T service instead of canceling, depending on your situation. Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for AT&T Wireless Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
