In a nutshell: Mobile carriers are constantly offering new plans and promotions to entice customers to switch to them. However, getting a new number would be rather inconvenient. If you have a wireless account with AT&T and want to switch over to a new carrier while keeping the same number, then there are a couple of things you must do, starting with unlocking your device.

If you have a wireless account with AT&T and want to switch over to a new carrier while keeping the same number, then there are a couple of things you must do, starting with unlocking your device.
Your AT&T mobile device is possibly locked to AT&T. Before you can transfer it over to a new carrier, you need to unlock the device. To qualify for unlocking, your device must be fully paid off, it must have been purchased 60 or more days ago, it cannot have been reported lost or stolen, and you cannot owe AT&T any money. If your device is eligible for unlocking, AT&T should unlock it for you automatically. If it is not unlocked, you may not have met all the criteria for unlocking yet. After making sure your phone is unlocked, you will need to get a number transfer PIN. Your new carrier will ask you for it, as part of a safety procedure to protect you from unauthorized number transfers. This number is only good for 4 days, so make sure that you only request it when your device is unlocked and you are ready to transfer your AT&T number.

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
