When you are stuck at the airport waiting for your Delta flight it can seem like an eternity. Most airlines will offer you some sort of compensation if your flight is delayed for more than one or two hours but Delta is different.
As long as your flight was not delayed or cancelled due to a unique scenario such a terrorist threat, chances are you can receive reprieve for the delay in the form of flight compensation. Flight compensation is whereby an airline gives aggrieved customers money for delayed or cancelled flights simply to keep them as customers.
Delta's Flight Compensation Policy for Delays
Your Delta flight has to be delayed for 4 hours or more for you to receive compensation. You will then be awarded with a reroute to a different airport so as to reach your original destination, transportation to the new airport, a voucher for a hotel if you need to stay overnight that can be as high as $100 and free transport to the hotel.
Delayed Delta flights from an EU member country are compensated under EC Regulation 261/2004 which says that the amount of your compensation will be calculated based on the distance of the flight and the duration of the delay.
Delta's Compensation Policy for Cancelled Flights
If a domestic Delta flight is canceled, Delta will place you on the next available flight to your destination. Sometimes, the flight might depart from a different airport.
Worry not as Delta will provide transportation to the airport free of charge. In some cases you will be awarded a voucher that you can use to travel to the airport.
If you do not want to be rerouted to another airport, you can ask Delta for a refund. Moreover, Delta is obligated to refund you if you are travelling within or to an EU member country.
Getting Compensation for Delta Airlines Flight Delays or Cancellations
Since you know what is in store for you if your Delta flight gets cancelled or delayed, you should go ahead and make a request for compensation. You can do this by signing up for Service. Service is an application that examines the flight itineraries in your inbox and automatically files a claim if your flight is delayed or cancelled.
Connect the email that you typically use to book flights. The app scans all the data from the past year of travel itineraries for flight delays and cancellations that lasted for over an hour and a half
If the app locates a match, it will process a compensation claim for the flight and then it will negotiate with the airline on your behalf. The best part is that the app has a feature called AutoProtect which when turned on, enables the app to file claims whenever your flights are delayed or cancelled in real time without you even opening the app.
There are no legal requirements for US airlines to offer compensation for delayed or cancelled flights but with Service, you significantly increase your odds of being compensated.
If using Service yields no results, you should contact Delta customer service immediately for some help. You can contact them via:
Phone
You can call the Delta customer service phone number at any time of day or night and file a complaint about delayed or cancelled flights. The customer service agent will help you find another flight or get compensation.
Sending Delta customer support an email is another option when your flight is delayed or cancelled. It is not as fast as calling them but it will yield results.
Help Desk
You can also use Delta's online help desk to file a complaint about a delayed or cancelled flight. The help desk is surprisingly quick.
