What Do I Do If My Delta Airlines Flight Is Delayed?

Delayed flights might be one of the most annoying things but Delta has a helpful policy. Depending on how delayed your flight is, you can choose to book with an alternative flight or you can opt for a refund, even on some nonrefundable flights. Speaking to a Delta representative and signing up for flight notifications can help take the edge of your worry. Even if it does happen, you still have options.

You booked a fantastic trip, one you've been eager to take, when you see the gremlins of inconvenience rear their ugly heads. Your flight has been delayed. So, what do you? What is Delta Airlines' policy in all this? This guide will tell you what to expect.

Delta's Policy

  1. If your flight is cancelled or even delayed significantly, you will either be rebooked on an alternative flight, or your ticket will be converted to an eCredit for future travel with Delta. It is unclear which one might be the best option, it may depend on the availability of alternative flights. Please call Delta directly if you have any questions about their policy or need to book.
  2. In some cases, you would be entitled to a refund of any unused portion of your nonrefundable ticket, if you request it.
  3. If you want to keep the eCredit, then no further action on your part is needed until you decide to book a new flight.
  4. Delta makes every effort to process eligible refunds and credits within 7 days, but it can take up to 30 business days.
  5. Delta eCredits can be verified online at delta.com with your ticket number.
  6. Passengers who paid with cash or check will receive a check, made out to the passenger on the ticket, within 30 business days of Delta's receipt of the refund request.
  7. Those who paid with a credit or debit card will have the refund put on the original form of payment within 30 business days of Delta's receipt of the refund request, but it may take up to two billing cycles before appearing on your card statement.

Checking the Status of Your Refund, if Applicable

  1. You can check your refund's status online here https://www.delta.com/refunds/checkRefundsStatusAction.action
  2. Or by calling the Delta Reservation Sales department here. You can also call if you have questions about your refund amount.

Helpful Tips

  1. Sign up for weather alerts and check Delta's Flight Status tool for changes in your flight. Delta also has flight notifications available.
  2. You can also call Delta's main customer service line if you have any questions about a current reservation.
  3. Apply for Trip Protection or some other travel protection plan.
