Why Was My Citicard Credit Card Declined?

If your CitiCard was declined during a recent transaction, you probably need to get the problem solved quickly, so you can get access to your money again. There are several possible reasons your CitiCard was declined. These include having insufficient funds, being over your credit limit, late payment of bills, using it somewhere new, and more.

If you have a CitiCard that was mysteriously declined, you're probably confused and worried. Fortunately, many of the reasons why it may have been declined are pretty easy to fix. Still, you should figure out the reason it was rejected as quickly as you can, so you can regain access to your money. To do so, just ask yourself the following questions.

Do I Have Enough Money or Credit?

Starting with the most obvious reason, you should check your account to see if the problem is simply that you don't have enough money in the account, if you have a debit card, or are past your credit limit if you have a credit card.

Did My CitiCard Expire?

If your CitiCard expired, it would be declined when you try to use it. Request a replacement card.

Did I Use It Somewhere New?

Citibank is always on the lookout for signs that your card was stolen, to protect you from fraud. One of the ways it does this is by making sure that your card is being used in the area you usually use it in. The company may assume that if your card was used well outside that area, it is because the card was stolen. If you used your CitiCard somewhere far outside of your usual area, Citibank may decline all further transactions until you check in with them. You can avoid this by notifying Citibank when you travel.

Did I Violate One of Citibank's Terms of Service?

If you violated one of Citibank's terms of service, the bank may have shut off your card, either temporarily or permanently as punishment. It is possible to do this accidentally, so you should go over Citibank's terms of service and contact a representative to ask about it.

Am I Behind on My Payments?

If you have fallen behind on your CitiCard payments, the bank may shut your card off until you catch up.

Was a Hold Put on My Account?

Car rental companies, hotels and other merchants will sometimes put a hold on your bank account to secure the funds for a transaction. The hold could cause new transactions to be declined due to credit limits.

Was My Card Declined for an Online Transaction?

If the problem happened in an online transaction, you may simply have entered some of the card information incorrectly. Many transactions require you to enter the short number that's on the back of your card. If you did so incorrectly, the transaction would be declined. The same goes for entering the wrong billing address. Autofill can sometimes cause these kinds of problems.

Is the Card Broken?

Your CitiCard could have been damaged in a way that isn't visible but can make it unreadable by your merchant's card reader. If you can't find any other reason for your card to be declined, you should consider this possibility, and get your card replaced.
