Citibank, which issues the CitiCard, does offer customers hardship assistance on a case by case basis. If you require hardship assistance, you can follow these steps to request an extension:

  1. Contact CitiCard via telephone to make your initial request. You can also ask that any late fees or late charges be waived during any deferment period.
  2. Ask if you qualify for either a deferment or a forbearance based on your specific circumstances.
  3. Provide CitiCard with any documentation they are requesting to process your request. This documentation could include:
  • Proof of changes in financial circumstances (such as decreased work hours, decreased pay, layoffs or terminations).
  • Proof of financial hardships that are not caused by a change in work status (such as unexpected medical bills, natural disasters or other incidences that impact your ability to pay).
  • If you can resume payments before the deferment period ends, do so. This will help re-establish your good standing with Citibank and reduce any interest accrual that occurs while the payments are deferred.

    1. Because CitiCard is in the business of making money, you may have to call multiple times and escalate the issues with each subsequent phone call. You will likely hear "No" a lot at the beginning, but persistence can pay off.
    2. Even if you are denied an extension on your credit card bill, you may still be able to negotiate a lower interest rate (even a 0% APR for a set amount of time). While this will not help in the short term, it will lead to great savings in the long run and can help you pay down your balance quicker.
