“I am a merchant who regularly takes checks as part of doing business. The nearest BOA office to my business is about 30 miles away, but I was taking checks written on them as a service to my customers. Not anymore, since I called the bank one day recently to see if a check I was holding would clear (asking if the funds were available). I was told by the customer service rep that they could no longer tell me that information. They could only tell me if the account in question was "open and active". Useless information when you are trying to get your money. I would have had to close up my business, drive 30 miles to the BOA branch, only to perhaps be told the check would NOT clear, then drive 30 miles back. This is the stupidest practice I've ever heard of and do not know of any other bank doing business this way. Needless to say, I no longer accept checks drawn on BOA. ”
