This number is not to be used unless you actually have an account with Capital One Auto Finance, as it sets up an ironclad lockout unless you're willing to provide your account number or your Social Security number.

When I dialed, I was first asked to provide my 13-digit Capital One Auto Finance account number. If I didn't know it, I could instead hit the pound key. Not having an account, I hit the pound key. I was then told to enter my Social Security number to access my account. I decided to hit the pound key again to see if that would get me anywhere. The system told me that it would need my Social Security number to access my account.

I again hit the pound key, and the system again told me that I needed to enter my nine-digit Social Security number to access my account. Once again, I hit the pound key, and the system asked me one more time for my Social Security number. This time, after hitting the pound key, the system didn't give me a chance to provide my number or do anything else. It simply said, "Thank you for calling Capital One Auto Finance. Goodbye."

Based on this experience, I'm impressed with the ironclad lockout that Capital One has set up. I'm not surprised it exists, as this is sensitive information and there's no reason to use this number unless you have an account with them. However, the four strikes and you're out system is a fairly unique feature. Most numbers like this will give you nearly unlimited attempts to enter your information, whereas this one makes it practically impossible for anyone to get in when they shouldn't have proper access. If I did have need for this number, I would feel comfortable using it.
