Introduction

If you have a Verizon account but have decided that you would rather try out a different carrier, you may want to transfer your existing Verizon number to that new carrier. It would be much easier than making sure that everyone you know gets a new phone number for you. Fortunately, the number transfer process is pretty easy.

What You'll Need

Do not close your Verizon account until after the transfer has been completed. If you cancel it first, your new carrier might not be able to get you the same phone number.Verizon does not charge you any fee for transferring your number to a new carrier. However, if your Verizon contract has a term that hasn't finished yet, you may be charged an early termination fee for closing your Verizon account. If you are trying to port out a total of 10 or more phone lines in your Verizon account to a new carrier, you need to call Verizon customer service for assistance. You cannot use the procedure described below for the transfer.Your Number Transfer PIN is valid for 7 days, so you have one week after requesting the PIN to contact your new carrier and get the transfer process going. You can generate a new Number Transfer PIN five times per day. However, do not generate a new one if you have already provided your previous PIN to the new carrier. Doing so will mess up the transfer process.

Go to the Verizon home page.

Verizon home page

Click on the "Sign in" button, located in the upper right corner to sign into your Verizon account.

Select the "Bills" option.

Click on "Pay Bill."

Pay off your existing Verizon balance in full.

You will not be allowed to port your number to a new carrier until you have paid your Verizon bill in full.

Go to your Account page.

Number Lock is a security feature that prevents your number from being ported to another carrier. It is meant to keep hackers and identity thieves from stealing it. You will need to turn Number Lock off before you can transfer your number to another carrier.
If you do not have Number Lock enabled, skip to step 10.

Click on "Account Settings."

Select the "Security Settings" option.

Turn Number Lock off.

Dial *#PORT from your Verizon phone.

You will be sent a link to generate a Number Transfer PIN. You need this pin so your new carrier can use your existing Verizon number.

Generate the Number Transfer PIN and copy it.

Contact your new carrier and tell them that you want to open an account with a number transferred from your Verizon account.

Provide them with your Number Transfer PIN when you do.

Follow the instructions from the carrier to finish setting up your account and transferring your number.

Close your Verizon account.

Conclusion

If you need any help from Verizon during the transfer process, call a Verizon customer service representative to get it. The customer service call center is open from Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm EST and on Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm EST.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for Verizon Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
