Even though a good percentage of airline passengers' baggage eventually returns to the owners without much trouble, some circumstances may arise, leading to your bags getting damaged, delayed, or lost.

When such things happen, airlines may provide a few options that you could explore to ensure speedy tracking of your belongings. Failure to take prompt action could have serious negative consequences, including auctioneering of valuable items or total disposal of your items if they aren't of much value.

Delta Airlines advises its customers to follow the steps outlined to find their lost belongings after traveling with the airline:

  • Locate the airport's Baggage Service Center.
  • Speak to a Delta agent and explain that you want to file a lost baggage claim.
  • The agent will give you an information folder that you'll use in due process of locating your baggage.
  • Take note of the eight-digit alphanumeric code that you'll use as your reference number for the next step.
  • Go to the Delta website at https://www.delta.com/bags/claimLanding.action.
  • Select the icon that reads "Baggage Online Claim Forms."
  • Beginning filling out your baggage information, starting with its category and subcategory.
  • Provide detailed descriptions of your item's brand, model, exterior and case color, and size.
  • Include the item's serial number and the day, month, and year you lost it.
  • Click on the "Unique Identifier" icon and select a favorable description of your item's uniqueness.
  • If present, remember to indicate the item's "Unique ID Number" in the space provided.
  • At the bottom of the page, you'll see a space left for any details that the templates in the steps above could not accommodate. It's recommended that you fill this section to ensure that you've provided thorough and accurate information, thus making the recovery process faster and more efficient.
  • Click "Continue".
  • The next step involves the filling of contact information.
  • At this stage, fill out your names and be keen on ensuring that you use the passenger's name that was used to check the lost, delayed, or damaged baggage. Enter the name exactly as it appears on your bag file or original reservation.
  • Provide the file reference number on the information folder you were given by the Delta agent at the Baggage Service Center.
  • Continue to provide your flight itinerary details.

Once you've completed the process, you'll receive a lost report number through a confirmation email. You can use this number to keep tabs on the baggage tracking process. However, Delta keeps its customers posted on the same via regular email messages.

A thorough search for your lost item typically takes approximately 30 days, after which the airline communicates with the passenger via email if their efforts were unfruitful.

If your item is recovered, Delta may reach out via phone or email messages for verification and development of return-to-owner plans. You can also follow the guidelines below to update your claim, if there's some information you feel you forgot.
