Whatsapp's muting option is a good way to keep the noise from incoming message notices silent during certain pre-set periods of time. The only real way to find out if somebody has muted you is to ask them directly. While Whatsapp's customer service representatives are happy to help you with a long list of issues, it may be difficult to get them to tell you who muted you due to privacy issues. Other options, such as trying to get your friend's phone to check if you've been muted, are definitely not a good idea and can lead to trouble.
Whatsapp is a very popular messaging app that allows users full control of who can contact them and when. It even offers blocking and muting options that let you filter out the messages you want to receive from certain people or groups at any given time. For example, if you are in an important meeting and don't want to hear your phone ring every time you get a message from a given person, you can mute the conversation and continue to receive messages without the noisy interruption.
When you want to mute a conversation, it will give you the choice of doing so for 8 hours, one week, or longer. You choose the option you want, and the app will take care of the rest, ensuring you won't get any notices from that specific conversation for however long you choose. Additionally, with the latest update to the app, archiving a conversation mutes it automatically. While messages will continue to come through as usual, you won't receive any notices and won't know you have messages waiting until you open the conversation yourself.
As per Whatsapp's terms of service, only the person who mutes a conversation can see if it's muted or not. This happens when the user visualizes the list of threads in the app and sees the muted ones showing an icon of a speaker crossed out by a diagonal line next to the contact's name. Because of this and the fact that messages from muted conversations will still come through in the normal manner and only the notices for new messages are turned off, the muted contact won't know if they have been muted or not. The only thing that will happen is that their messages won't be seen for a while, and the checkmarks on their side of the conversation will not turn blue until they are.
While it's impossible to know through your app if any of your contacts have muted you, there are a few things you can do to find out, including:
GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like WhatsApp in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our How Do I Know If Someone Muted Me on WhatsApp? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
