In WhatsApp, you can delete a sent message before the recipient reads it. This can be handy to correct a mistake or remove an embarrassing chat. To do this, go into your sent messages and long-press the message you want to delete. When the menu pops up, choose Delete. The person will no longer see it in the messages. It's still possible to screenshot the message before you delete it.
If you've ever sent a text message and immediately regretted it, you can understand what a lifesaver this WhatsApp feature is. It allows you to delete messages before people read them — but only if you do it within seven minutes. Here's how.
To delete a message you've sent on WhatsApp, you'll need to open the conversation where you sent it. To select the chat:
Once you select the message, a menu will appear at the top of your screen. You should see an option that says More. Select this option to open up more options.
In the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, you should see an option that says "Delete." Select this option to delete your message from WhatsApp.
Each message you send or receive will have a trash can icon in the upper right-hand corner.
You should:
Ensure you tap Delete for Everyone to delete messages you sent to all your contact. This will delete the message from your chat and the recipients' phones.
If you want to delete a sent message from WhatsApp, but the people who received it have already seen it, you can't. However, you can delete your message for recipients who have not yet read or forwarded it. You will have to act fast as there are only seven minutes during which deleting a sent message remains possible.
GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like WhatsApp in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our How Do I Delete a Sent Message Before Someone Reads It on WhatsApp? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
