What are the hours and when should I call?

TurboTax operates the call center for this 800-446-8848 phone number 24 hours, 7 days. The short answer is that you should call on a Tuesday. This observation and the following section are based on analysis of a sample set of 5,990 calls made in the last 90 days using our free, web-based phone (see above).

Automatically call when they open

When you use our free AI-powered phone to call and talk, wait on hold, or navigate for you, it will automatically wait until the TurboTax call center opens before trying to call. It will ask your permission before it places the call, so you can also further delay that scheduled call until you are ready. But that means you can "set it and forget it" ahead of time.
An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this TurboTax phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like TurboTax staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.

The least busy time to call

The least busy day to call TurboTax is Sunday. The most busy day to call is Monday, which averages 205% more phone calls by comparison. Again, this is based on a sample of 5,990 calls made with our AI-powered, web-based phone in the last 90 days.

The shortest wait on hold

We measured the shortest hold times to be on Tuesday. The longest wait in the queue on average occurs on Sunday, which is 383% longer than the minimum. As you can see, there is more fluctuation in hold time over the course of the week than there is in call volume.
But if you use our free call and talk for me or wait on hold for me service, you don't really need to worry about average wait times.

The best time to call TurboTax

In summation, the best day to call TurboTax is Tuesday. It isn't the least busy day, but the fact that hold times are shortest combined with it being on the busy side tells us that TurboTax staffs up on Tuesday to handle the higher call volume, and that makes it the best time to call.

Calling this TurboTax Customer Number

Adam Goldkamp is the editor / author responsible for this content.

Calling this number was one of the most irritating experiences I've had, simply because of the automated system's inability to understand basic questions. Things started out fairly normally, as I called this number and was asked if I was calling for TurboTax or for QuickBooks. I said I was calling for TurboTax, and the system then asked if I was calling for the American or Canadian version of the product. I said that I was calling for the U.S. version, and this was where the problems began.

The system asked me for the reason I was calling, and I said that I wanted to get information on which version of the product was right for me. It said it could not understand my question, so I tried to simplify my response by saying "Help choosing a product". It again failed to understand, and I tried again with "Choose a product". Once again, it failed to understand, asking if I needed help with billing.

After six tries, it said that it would transfer me to a specialist, but needed to confirm the name on the account before it would connect me with anyone. I told the system I did not have an account, but it wouldn't accept that and asked again for my name. I said "no account", and the system took that as me giving my name as No Account. I said that wasn't correct and began the same endless loop again before ending the call.

Based on this, I would not want to use this service again. Maybe it's helpful if you have an account with TurboTax and you need help with something specific, but it doesn't allow you to get any general help with its products. Even if you have a specific need, the system being this poor at understanding makes it difficult to use.
