How Do I Exchange an Item from Target?

Target exchanges are processed differently in-store and online. Merchandise can always be exchanged at the store, but only online items can be returned by mail. This article describes Target's exchange policies, details of the exchange process, potential reasons for declined returns, and if it's possible to exchange without a receipt.

The process for exchanging items at Target depends on the original form of payment, place of purchase, and receipt availability. Target is guest-centric and offers many ways of locating transactions to complete exchanges.

Exchanging In Store

For items that were initially purchased in-store, Target exchanges are performed at the Guest Services counter. If you provide the receipt or the transaction can be located with your RedCard, Target will respect your original sale price. Free promotional items can also be exchanged, provided you have the receipt, if the items are still in stock. If the replacement item is less expensive than the original merchandise, the difference will be refunded back to the original form of payment.

Online Exchanges and Replacements

If you ordered an item online, it's possible to exchange it in-store for immediate results. If you would prefer to request an online exchange, it's necessary to contact Target. Guest Services will process the exchange as a return and new purchase, honoring the original purchase price.

In some instances, such as when damaged merchandise arrives or items are missing, replacements are processed as an even exchange with no additional charges. To request a replacement, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your online Target account.
  2. Click on Orders if using a browser, or Purchases if using the app.
  3. Select Fix an Issue next to any missing items.
  4. Follow the prompts. If available, the item will be processed as an exchange. If unavailable, Target will provide a refund back to the original form of payment.
  5. Updates can be tracked in the Order History section.
  6. If required, Target will provide you a shipping label to return the damaged item.

Exchanging Without a Receipt

Target has a few methods of looking up the transaction to perform returns without a receipt. Stores can search by:

  • RedCard transaction records
  • Transactions made with third-party credit or debit cards
  • Checking account and routing numbers with a physical check present
  • Target gift cards with the physical gift card
  • Delivery, shipping confirmation, and order details emails
  • Return barcodes, physically and in the Target app

Without proof of purchase, Target may provide a merchandise credit instead of a cash refund. Items exchanged using a gift receipt also provide a merchandise credit. The current price of the item, and thus the value of the exchange, may also differ.

Declined Online Returns

If you ship your Target return to the online return center and it is declined, the center will ship the item back to you via FedEx and send an email with details regarding it. Target Plus Partner returns always require a receipt, so it's important to include that in the return shipment. Other reasons for a declined return include:

  • Returning an item outside of the return window, which is usually 90 days. RedCard holders often receive an additional 30 days.
  • The item appeared opened, used, or worn. Opened makeup can usually still be returned or exchanged.
  • Target's return center was unable to locate the order number or other information needed to process the return.
  • The merchandise was not an online Target item.

If your return was declined when it shouldn't have been, it's always worth checking with Guest Services about the issue. Errors that were caused by Target employees can be resolved by Guest Services or a manager.
