What Is a Wire Transfer?

A wire transfer is a type of electronic transfer. There are several ways to transfer funds electronically, but a wire is the fastest, because it goes directly from one bank to another. However, getting the money moving that quickly costs money, so wire transfers always come with fees. They're best used when time is of the essence and the amount of the transfer is high enough to be worth the fee.

How to Send a Wire Using the App

To send a wire using the Chase app, follow these instructions:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Sign in.
  3. Tap on Pay & Transfer.
  4. Tap on Wires & Global Transfers.
  5. Choose a transfer recipient from the list. If your intended recipient isn't on the list, choose the option to add a recipient and enter the needed information.
  6. Choose the account you want to take the money out of.
  7. Enter the amount to wire.
  8. Enter the date to send the wire.
  9. Enter messages to the recipient and the recipient's bank, as well as a memo to yourself, if desired.
  10. Tap the Next button.
  11. Review the wire details.
  12. Tap the Schedule Wire button.
  13. Tap the Close button.

How to Send a Wire in Person

You can also send a wire by going in to a physical Chase bank and telling a teller that you want to send a wire. You will need to have the following information with you:

  • A government-issued photo ID.
  • Your bank account number.
  • Your bank's routing number.
  • Your recipient's name.
  • Your recipient's address.
  • Your recipient's bank's name.
  • Your recipient's bank's routing number.
  • Your recipient's bank account number.

Wire Transfer Times

Domestic wire transfers typically take less than 24 hours. International wire transfers can take up to five business days.
