How to Get a Refund From Airbnb

Airbnb allows property owners to set their cancellation policy based on six options: flexible, moderate, strict, long-term, super strict 30 day, and super strict 60 day.

Flexible Cancellation Policy

To get a refund under this policy the following must be met:

  1. Stay was cancelled any time up to 24 hours prior to check-in.
  2. If the stay is cancelled within 24 hours of arrival, the refund will be minus the first day of the stay and the Airbnb service fee.
  3. Cancellation after arriving entitles you to a partial refund of the unused days, but the service fee is non-refundable.

Moderate Cancellation Policy

The criteria under this policy is as follows:

  1. Cancellations must be made before five days of check-in for a full refund.
  2. If the room is cancelled within five days of check-in, you will receive a partial refund minus the first night's stay and the service fee and half the booking fee.
  3. If you cancel after arriving, you will get a refund for any unused portions of the stay at a 50% rate, and the nights stayed will be billed at the rate listed when booking.

Strict Cancellation Policy

To qualify under this policy the following must be met:

  1. Cancellations must be made within 48 hours of booking and 14 days of the arrival date to qualify for a full refund.
  2. Cancellations prior to seven days of arrival qualify for a 50% refund minus the service fee. The cleaning fee will be refunded as well.
  3. If you cancel the reservation within the seven days, you cannot get a refund.

Long-Term Cancellation Policy

To get a refund under this policy, the following must be met:

  1. Cancellations made more than 30 days in advance of the stay are eligible for a full refund.
  2. If you cancel within 30 days of the stay, you are still responsible for the first month's reservation.
  3. If you check out early, you will still have to pay for 30 days following the time you leave or until the end of the original booking.

Super Strict 30 Day Cancellation and Super Strict 60 Day Cancellation

Seasoned hosts have the option to impose super strict policies regarding cancellation and refunds. Cancellations made within the 30 or 60 days of arrival are ineligible for refunds, and those before that time frame only generate a 50% refund.

Requests for refunds are processed through the Airbnb Resolution Center by doing the following:

  1. Log into your Airbnb Account.
  2. Click the link for the Resolution Center.
  3. Select "Request Money."
  4. Choose the reservation that needs to be refunded.
  5. Complete the on-screen prompts.
  6. The funds will be placed back on the card used to secure the reservation.

It is easy to request a refund from Airbnb, but you must make sure it meets the refund policy set by the host. For more information, contact Airbnb customer support here.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for AirBnB Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like AirBnB in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our How Do I Get a Refund from AirBnB? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible.
