What are the hours and when should I call?

US Citizenship & Immigration Service operates the call center for this 800-375-5283 phone number Mon-Fri 8am-8pm ET. The short answer is that you should call on a Thursday. This observation and the following section are based on analysis of a sample set of 1,106 calls made in the last 90 days using our free, web-based phone (see above).

Automatically call when they open

When you use our free AI-powered phone to call and talk, wait on hold, or navigate for you, it will automatically wait until the US Citizenship & Immigration Service call center opens before trying to call. It will ask your permission before it places the call, so you can also further delay that scheduled call until you are ready. But that means you can "set it and forget it" ahead of time.
An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this US Citizenship & Immigration Service phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like US Citizenship & Immigration Service staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.

The least busy time to call

The least busy day to call US Citizenship & Immigration Service is Friday. The most busy day to call is Tuesday, which averages 37% more phone calls by comparison. Again, this is based on a sample of 1,106 calls made with our AI-powered, web-based phone in the last 90 days.

I have a pending citizenship application with USCIS, so I wanted to call and check on it, but I was at work so I didn't have the proper documentation accessible. I quickly learned that when you call USCIS you need to have all of your information available or you aren't going to get anywhere. They will only look you up by your receipt number and not by name, work ID number, or any other identifier. The call system is very strict and there is no way to bypass the automated system unless you give them this information.

I called and was immediately greeted by an automated voice that said, "Thank you for calling US or USCIS. To ensure a high quality of service, we record our calls." There was then a large pause about a court case in Texas that made some type of stay illegal for the moment, and then another message about their privacy act notice. At this point I was well into the call a few minutes and not even to a menu yet. Finally, it said, "I can understand full sentences, how can I help you?"

I said that I wanted to talk to an agent about my case, and it responded by saying, "Before I can help you, I will need your receipt number, do you have your receipt number now? It is three letters followed by ten numbers. Don’t forget if you move during the application process you need to notify us immediately or your application will be delayed."

I tried to tell the system several times that I didn't have the number, but it responded in various ways to tell me that I couldn't get to an agent without it. Finally, it said, "I’m sorry, I can’t transfer you without more information about what you are calling about. If you are ready to give me the reason for your call, I will try to assist you. Now please tell me what you are calling about."At this point, I hung up and figured I'd just have to call when I was home and able to get that number.

Why Customers Call US Citizenship & Immigration Service

If you have time to do a bit of reading before you call US Citizenship & Immigration Service, we recommend you read over some of our problem-specific articles.

Can I lose my US citizenship?

Yes, it is possible to lose your US citizenship, but the circumstances are rare. There are three ways this can occur. First, if you willingly renounce your citizenship before a US diplomat or consular officer. Second, if you commit an expatriating act with the intent to give up your US citizenship, such as serving in a foreign military against the US or working for a foreign government that requires renunciation of US citizenship. Lastly, if you obtain naturalization in another country voluntarily, you may lose your US citizenship. However, if you acquire foreign citizenship through marriage, employment, or other non-expatriating acts, your US citizenship will typically not be affected. It is important to consult with an immigration attorney regarding your specific situation.

What are the reasons for a US citizenship application denial?

There are several reasons for the denial of a US citizenship application. Some common grounds for denial include failing the citizenship test, not meeting the residency requirements, lack of good moral character, providing false information, and not demonstrating a sufficient understanding of the English language or basic knowledge of US history and government. Criminal convictions, misrepresentation, and fraud in previous immigration or citizenship applications can also lead to denial. Additionally, failure to show continuous residence and physical presence in the US or failure to pay taxes can be reasons for denial. Each case is evaluated individually, and it is essential to consult an immigration attorney for guidance to address any potential issues and increase the chances of a successful application.

What are the citizenship test and interview requirements?

The citizenship test and interview requirements are part of the naturalization process for individuals seeking to become U.S. citizens. These requirements aim to assess the applicant's knowledge of U.S. history, government, and English language skills. The citizenship test consists of a written exam and an oral interview conducted by an immigration officer. It evaluates the applicant's understanding of the rights, responsibilities, and values of U.S. citizenship. The interview ensures the applicant's eligibility and involves questions about the application, personal background, and supporting documents. Additionally, applicants are required to demonstrate their ability to speak, write, and read English during the interview. Adequate preparation is crucial for successfully completing these requirements and achieving U.S. citizenship.
