My Experience Calling 800-433-5778

I decided to call Geek Squad's 800-433-5778 customer support phone number after receiving numerous emails alerting me that my subscription with the company was being renewed without my approval. The emails often say that my subscription will renew automatically for hundreds of dollars and the payment would be deducted from my bank account. Even though links are included in the email, I never click on anything, but I wanted to find out from Geek Squad how to stop these emails.

As soon as I called, the automated system told me to press 9 for Spanish or wait on the line for English. The menu of options included choosing from repairs, tech support, installation, delivery, or protection plans. I was also given the choice to say specifically what I needed help with, so I opted to say 'customer service' since I wasn't sure which choice would lead me to someone who could handle my email problem.

However, the automated system didn't transfer me to a representative; instead, it told me that team members are specialized in different areas, so I had to make a choice. I decided tech support might be my best bet and proceeded with that selection. I was placed on hold for a few minutes before a rep came on the line.

She asked what I needed help with, and I explained my frustration with receiving recurring emails from Geek Squad about a subscription that I've never had nor have ever renewed. The rep was understanding and shared that many people have dealt with these emails, which she indicated were scams. She said that scammers have been using the Geek Squad name to lure people into sending money to a fake account or revealing personal information. Some people have fallen victim to these scams, she added. 

The rep advised me not to click on any links or send requested information but, instead, to ensure that my antivirus software is up-to-date and to change passwords to important accounts on a regular basis. She also gave me a link where I could read about ways to identify scam emails, also known as phishing emails, adding that many of these emails request funds right away, include spelling and grammar mistakes, and use wrong corporate email addresses. Unfortunately, Geek Squad can't stop every scammer from sending out these emails, she told me, so customers should be wary.

After sharing this information, she asked if I needed more help. I said no and thanked her for her time. The call was very productive, the wait time was short and the rep was reassuring, taking her time to assure me that Geek Squad wasn't withdrawing any money from my bank account for an unauthorized subscription.
