Two-Factor Authentication Setup

Setting up 2FA is a straightforward procedure you can carry out from your mobile phone or computer. Follow these simple steps to set it up on your eTrade account:

1. Accessing Your Account Settings

You must first log into your eTrade account using your credential. Next, navigate to the "Profile" section on the top right corner of the screen, and click it to access your account settings.

2. Locating Security Preferences

Look for a tab labeled "Security" or something similar within your account settings. This is where you'll find options related to enhancing the security features of your eTrade account. Click on this tab to proceed further.

3. Enabling Two-Factor Authentication

In the Security preferences section, search for an option mentioning "Two-Factor Authentication" and click it.

4. Choosing the Preferred Method

After selecting the Two-Factor Authentication option, you'll access various methods available for verification purposes. These typically include SMS authentication codes sent via text message or an authenticator app. Choose whichever way suits you best by clicking on its corresponding button.

SMS Verification

For SMS Verification:

  • Enter the received verification code into the designated field on eTrade's website.
  • Click "Submit" to finalize the setup.

For Authenticator App:

  • Enter manually generated six-digit codes from your authenticator app into corresponding fields displayed on eTrade's website.
  • Click "Submit" to complete the setup.

Backup Codes (Optional)

eTrade provides users backup codes that can be used if they cannot access their primary 2FA method temporarily (e.g. when changing devices). It's recommended that you take note of these backup codes and keep them somewhere secure but easily accessible when needed.
