Introduction

Losing your phone means you can no longer send texts, play games, listen to music, take selfies, watch videos, and the list goes on. But don’t worry. There are several steps you can take to track, secure, and possibly replace your SafeLink device. In this step-by-step guide, we walk you through the process of tracking a lost or stolen SafeLink phone.

Try the built-in tracking tools immediately

For iPhone: sign into iCloud.com or open the “Find My app” on another Apple device. Use “Play Sound” to help find it nearby, “Lost Mode” to lock it and display contact info, or “Erase iPhone” if you must remove data. For Android: go to google.com/android/find. You can ring, secure (lock) the device, show its location, or perform a remote factory reset.

Call or text the phone

Your phone may be nearby. To find out, call or text it. Keep the message short and include a contact method. Some people will answer it if they find it. If you suspect theft, skip this step and move to reporting. Never meet someone alone.

Report the loss to SafeLink / your carrier

Click here to contact SafeLink immediately to report a lost or stolen phone. Ask them to suspend service or deactivate the SIM to prevent unauthorized calls, messages, and charges. Provide your account number and the phone number associated with the device. You can also lock your service by visiting the Safelink Wireless website, clicking "My Service", then from the drop-down menu, clicking "Line Lock".

Locate and record device identifiers

If you have them saved, provide your phone’s IMEI and serial number to SafeLink and the police. If you don’t have them handy, check any original packaging, purchase receipts, or your account settings where devices may be listed.

Check tracking location details carefully

If tracking shows a location, note the time and exact coordinates. Do not attempt to retrieve a device from an unknown or potentially unsafe location by yourself. Instead, share this information with local law enforcement and SafeLink.

File a police report if theft is suspected

Provide law enforcement with the IMEI, serial number, last known location, and any tracking screenshots. A police report may be required for insurance claims or to block the device from being resold.

Secure your accounts and change passwords

Immediately change the passwords for your Apple ID or Google account, email, banking apps, and any services that use SMS-based two-factor authentication. Remove the missing device from account device lists where possible, and disable mobile payment methods (Apple Pay, Google Pay) from your account settings or bank.

Decide on remote erase

If recovery looks unlikely and sensitive data is at risk, use "Find My Device" to erase or lock the phone. Beware: erasing typically disables further tracking. Use this only when you accept that you cannot get the phone back.

Request replacement or device assistance from SafeLink

Ask SafeLink about replacement device options under their program rules. They’ll explain eligibility, documentation needed, and timelines for receiving assistance.

Monitor for fraudulent activity

Watch bank and credit accounts for suspicious transactions. Consider placing fraud alerts if you suspect identity theft. Keep records of all communications with SafeLink and law enforcement.

Conclusion

If your SafeLink phone is missing and you don’t know what to do, you came to the right place. First, calm down, the steps above can help protect your data and give you the best chance to recover or replace your phone.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for SafeLink Wireless Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
