How Do I Get Compensated for My British Airways Flight Being Delayed?

If your British Airways flight has been delayed, you may be eligible for compensation. The best way to claim compensation for British Airways-operated flights is by contacting the customer service team. They will get back to you with details of the compensation you can get.

How to Claim Compensation

By Mail

If you cannot claim compensation online, your best option is to write to British Airways. Address the letter to British Airways Customer Relations and express your desire to seek compensation. Even though writing to them is a good idea, you may not get help fast.

Online

The fastest and most convenient way to seek compensation is online. You need the following to complete the process:

  1. Your names and the names of any other passengers you may be claiming for
  2. Your bank account information
  3. The details of your expenses
  4. The details of your canceled or delayed flights
  5. Receipts and any other documents that may support your claim

If you wish to claim for someone else, you must have a signed letter of authority from them. You must also provide their contact information and the details of their canceled flights. There is no limit to the number of passengers for whom you can claim compensation.

When Can You Claim Compensation?

  1. If you were delayed for over three hours at your final destination and the delay is a result of factors that are within the control of British Airways
  2. If you were notified about the cancelation less than 14 days prior to your scheduled date of departure and the cancelation arises from factors that are within the control of British Airways. However, there are exceptions if:
  3. You are informed of the cancelation seven to 13 days before your scheduled departure time offered an alternative route, which makes it possible to depart within two hours before your scheduled time of departure. With the alternative route, you should be able to get to your final destination less than four hours after your scheduled arrival time
  4. British Airlines informs you of the cancelation less than seven days prior to your scheduled departure time, and they offer an alternate route. With the new route, you get to depart within an hour before the scheduled departure time. You get to your destination within two hours after your scheduled arrival time.

When Can't You Receive Compensation?

  1. If your flight was delayed for less than three hours
  2. If your journey was delayed due to factors that are not within the control of British Airlines. This includes political instability, traffic control decisions, and weather conditions
  3. If British Airways informed you of the cancelation at least 14 days before the scheduled date of departure
  4. If you opt to travel from a different point of departure or to a different destination from the original booking
