It's no secret that credit cards are useful tools to have, but you must be careful to not spend more than what you can pay monthly to reduce your debt. But there are times when you must dispute a charge. This guide will show you how to dispute a charge with American Express and provide some tips to make the process go more smoothly.

Useful Information From American Express
1. Oftentimes, the fastest way to resolve a disputed charge is to contact the merchant. However, should you have any issues with the merchant, it's best to open the dispute online with American Express.
2. Charges that are pending cannot be disputed, they must post first before you can open a dispute ticket. American Express can and will monitor pending charges and alert you by email once they post to your account.
3. Billing disputes are normally resolved within a month but more complicated claims can require more time to resolve.
4. American Express removes the disputed amounts from your due payments until the dispute claim is resolved.
5. You can either check the status or cancel a billing dispute by going to Manage my Dispute in the Inquiry and Dispute Center. From there, select the open dispute from the View/Cancel Open Disputes section and click on the Cancel/View Status option.

Setting up Alerts for Posted Transactions
1. Log into your American Express account and go to the pending charges section of your statement and activity history.
2. Select the pending charge you want to monitor and click on the Alert me When Posted option.
3. Follow the steps and you will be updated by email once the pending charge is posted to your account.

Opening the Disputed Charge Claim
1. Log into your American Express account and go to the Statements and Activities page.
2. Select the transaction you wish to dispute to view all the details.
3. Click on the Dispute/Inquire about this Charge option to begin the claim.
4. If you have any questions or concerns about the dispute process, please call American Express' customer service here. They are available 24/7.

Disputed Charge vs Fraudulent Charge
There is a difference between a disputed charge and a fraudulent charge. Disputed charges occur at businesses you visit, but often are the result of an error and can be resolved by filing a dispute claim.
Fraudulent charges occur at merchants where you never conducted any business and happen when your card is lost or stolen or worse, has its card number stolen by a card skimmer hidden by hackers in an ATM and normal credit card readers. For fraudulent charges, call customer service as soon as you can.

Credit cards have their perks
but it's important to keep track of your transactions in case you need to dispute them
which is easy to do from your account. Select the posted charge you need to dispute and choose the Dispute option and follow the steps. Keep in mind it can take at least a month to resolve the dispute
but the disputed charge is removed from your payment due until the case is closed.
