E-Trade Financial Corporation is a subsidiary of Morgan Stanley, and offers a platform to trade financial assets. E-Trade members can trade common and preferred stocks, contracts, and exchange-traded funds, as well as options, mutual funds, and fixed-income investments. However, members who want to close their accounts can follow steps to do so. As an E-Trade member, you might choose to close an account because you find a better option, or you haven't been using the account. These steps will show you how to close an E-Trade Investing Account.

Visit E-Trade

The first step is to navigate to the E-Trade website or through the Mobile App. Navigate to the message center in your mobile app. If you visit the website use the internal messaging or chat feature on your PC's browser. Select account services from the messaging menu. You will be able to submit a request to close your account.

More Details

Transfer your funds out of your E-Trade account. Your balance should be zero before you close your account. When you select account services, you'll also be required to select a reason for closing the account. Be sure to include your account number with your request. Once you select the reason your message will be sent. If you have more than one E-Trade account, you'll need to repeat the process for each account. Make sure that you have a zero balance in your account before you proceed.

Closing Your Account

As an E-Trade member, you may consider closing your account because unused open accounts can be problematic. Your account could get hacked and you wouldn't know about it right away, because the account is inactive. This is why some members might opt to close any account that's open and unused or inactive. You may find out weeks or months, perhaps even longer, after the account has been tampered with.
