When you call the customer service phone number for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, you first encounter an automated messaging system. It informs you that the call may be monitored or recorded and offers a Spanish language option, which is great and increases caller accessibility.
You're next presented with the option of receiving written communications from Wells Fargo Home Lending in an "alternative format in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act" and to please let an agent know if you're interested or call the following phone number, (866) 234-8271.
I don't know what to make of this or the fact that it's presented before any of the options most customers would be calling about. Alternative format? In compliance with? Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but this comes across as bizarre and predatory.
After this statement, I was informed the line is experiencing higher than normal call volume (I appreciate the heads up), and if you're calling to make a payment, you're able to do so online for free. I was then expecting to encounter a standard phone menu, but instead, I was prompted to enter my loan number to get started. I don't currently have a loan number, so I just waited. There was a long moment of silence before the system asked for the loan number a second time. I continued to wait, so the system said I could also enter my social security number—press 1 to use your loan number, press 2 to use your social security number.
I'm not comfortable with entering my social security number over the phone to anyone or any institution, point blank, so I continued to wait. The system repeated for three cycles before finally putting me on hold to wait for an available representative.
So, for those looking to bypass the phone system navigation, just wait the two or so minutes it takes for the system to cycle through and automatically connect you. Too bad there isn't a more straightforward option.
