Introduction

If you have an account on X (formerly known as Twitter), and if you want to change your username, the process for doing so is fairly simple. However, if you are not allowed to change your username, you may be wondering what the problem is and how you can fix it. To learn more, just keep on reading.

What You'll Need

X has a number of rules for what usernames it allows and doesn't allow:Your username cannot be more than 15 characters long.It also cannot be less than four characters long.Usernames cannot contain either the word "admin" or the word "Twitter."Usernames can only contain letters, numbers, and underscores. No spaces or special characters are allowed. You cannot use the username of someone with an inactive account. You cannot change your username on a mobile device, the mobile app does not support this feature. If you want to change your username, you must log in to your X account from a desktop or laptop.

If your account has been limited or suspended because of policy violations then you will not be allowed to change your username.

Changing your username will not affect your followers in any way. They will just see a different username next to your profile picture.

The first thing to do is to change the username a little bit.

Add underscores before and/or after the name. Try adding different numbers to the name. If somebody is already using the username you want, changing it slightly could solve the problem.
Even if you have searched enough to be sure that nobody else has the username you want, try altering the name anyway. The username may be taken by a suspended or deactivated account. You won't be able to use the name, but you also may not be able to find it in a search.

Wait a while and try again.

If you have changed your username a number of times recently, X may not allow you to do so again for a while. If you changed your password within the last 48 hours then you will also not be allowed to change your username.

Clear your browser's cache and cookies.

Outdated cache items and cookies can make your browser behave strangely.

Switch to a different browser or even a different device and try again.

There may be something strange about the browser or device you are using that does not work well with the site.

Try a VPN.

Using a VPN to change your apparent location may bypass the problem that is preventing you from changing your username.

Conclusion

If you are having a hard time solving the problem, you can always try to contact an X customer service representative. Unfortunately, X does not offer phone-based customer service. There are, however, ways to contact it online.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for X Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
