Introduction

If you have an insurance plan through UnitedHealthcare and the time has come for you to move on to another provider's insurance, then you need to learn how to cancel your enrollment in UnitedHealthcare's plan. There are a couple of different ways to do that, depending on what type of plan you have.

What You'll Need

If you have a group plan through your employer, you may have difficulty canceling your enrollment outside of the open enrollment period. If it is outside that period, you may need a qualifying life event to allow you to do so. Qualifying life events include, but are not limited to, having a child, getting married, or losing your job. Check with your employer's human resources department to see if you are able to cancel your enrollment at this time. You can cancel your UnitedHealthcare Marketplace plan at any time of the year, no need to wait for a specific period. However, it will take about 14 days for the cancellation to take effect, so make sure to plan accordingly. If more than one person is on a UnitedHealthcare Marketplace plan but only one wants to cancel the plan, the cancellation will take effect for the person doing the canceling right away. Coverage will not end right away for the other people on the plan. Instead, they will be given the opportunity for a Special Enrollment Period to get on a new plan. Please note that enrolling in a Medicare plan does not automatically cancel any Marketplace plan you may already be on.
Your UnitedHealthcare Medicare plan may be canceled automatically if you move out of the area of the plan's coverage, fallen too far behind in your payments, lose your entitlement to benefits, or enroll in a different prescription drug plan.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for United Healthcare Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
