Skype is an online telecommunications platform that allows users to participate in video chat and video calls between computers, mobile devices, tablets, the Xbox One console, and smartwatches, using the Internet. Users can share messages, screens, and images with each other. The company was founded in 2003 and originally was used by many businesses for conference meetings. If you no longer use your Skype account, follow the steps outlined below to permanently delete your Skype account.
Note that Microsoft says it's not possible to separate your Skype profile from your Microsoft account. So, you can either choose to simply cancel your Skype subscription and delete the apps or you will have to delete your Microsoft account. We've outlined both options for you.
Go to www.skype.com
In the top right corner, select 'Sign In' and click on 'My Account.'
You will need to sign in to your Microsoft account with your email address, phone number, or Skype ID.
Click 'Next.'
Provide your password and click 'Sign In.'
On the right side of the screen, click on your profile picture and then select 'My Account.'
Under your subscriptions, select 'Cancel Subscription.'
You will be asked to provide a reason for canceling. Select the one that makes the most sense and confirm your cancelation. The options for you to choose from are:
I would like a higher subscription
I do not use the service right now
I do not need the service for the next few months
The service is too expensive
I am having call quality issues
Other
You will receive an email confirming you have successfully canceled your account.
Next, remove Skype apps off of your computers, phones, and devices to stop using the app.
If simply deactivating your Skype subscription and removing the apps is not good enough for you, you can choose to delete your Microsoft account. As the accounts are tied together, permanently deleting your Microsoft account will serve to also permanently delete your Skype account.
Go to this link to close your account.
You will be asked to verify your identity. You can choose to verify via text message, email, or a phone call to the details you have on file with your account.
Choose an option and enter the details to verify the phone number or email address.
Next, enter the verification code sent to your email address or phone, and click on 'Verify.'
You will be redirected to a screen advising you on all the steps you should take to make sure your account is ready to close, such as downloading all of your files.
Click 'Next.'
Check all the agreement boxes showing you understand what closing your account means.
Select a reason for leaving that best represents your mindset. The options provided include:
I'm combining Microsoft accounts
I use a different Microsoft account and don't need this one
This account has been hacked
I no longer want a Microsoft account
My reason isn't listed
Click on 'Mark account for closure.'
After you mark an account for closure, Microsoft waits 60 days before permanently closing the account. If you change your mind and want to reopen your account, simply log back in during that 60 day period.
If you are running into technical difficulties, before contacting Skype's customer support you can search the Help Forum. Other people may have experienced similar issues and have an outlined solution for you to follow.
If you're having difficulties in any of the steps outlined above, you can contact Skype's Live Chat function. You will need to provide your contact and person information to verify your identity.
