How do I downgrade my DirecTV package?

If you are looking for a way to downgrade your DirecTV package, you are not alone. Lately, many subscribers have been asking, "how do I downgrade my DirecTV package?" as well.

This may be due to a recent announcement by AT&T claiming there will be another increase in price for DirecTV services set to take effect in January 2020. Hence, it is in addition to another price increase that took place in 2019.

The Costs of Current Plans and How Much they will Increase

According to AT&T, because their programming costs went up, they will have to raise their fees for select plans. Therefore, starting January 19, 2020, the rates for both U-verse and DirecTV will cost up to $8 more per month.

Currently, the DirecTV Premier plan costs $189. Moreover, an additional $1.50 to $2 (depending on location) will be charged for the "Regional Sports Network", bringing the total increase to $10.

Package Prices and additional charges

The "Ultimate" plan currently costs $135 per month and $7 will be added.

The "Xtra" package plan currently costs $124 per month and $7 will be added.

The "Choice" package currently costs $110 per month and $5 will be added.

The "Select" plan currently costs $81 per month and $4 will be added.

The "Entertainment" plan currently costs $93 per month and $4 will be added.

All of the "Basic" plans will increase by $1 to $3.

There is also a new package called "Preferred Xtra" that is slightly cheaper than Xtra plan. The Preferred Xtra plan includes some channels from the Ultimate package without the sports only channels, aside from ESPN and ESPN2. It is essential, for those who don't really watch sports but want more variety then what some of the lower-priced packages offer.

Those who received promotional pricing will still keep their discount until it expires, after that, they will be required to pay the new costs associated with their plans.

Basic promotional pricing ranges from $21 to $55 per month, usually, for one year.

What You Should Know Before You Downgrade your DirecTV Package

If you are downgrading due to higher rates than expected, check to see if you received a promotion that includes extra channels for a specific amount of time, which may have expired; therefore, adding the cost of those extra channels to your bill. If so, you can always cancel the extras to save money.

Or, you may have received a special discount rate for a certain amount of time that has expired.

Details of all charges and promotions can be found on the order confirmation sent to you when setting up services.

Just to let you know, decreasing your DirecTV package would mean ending your current contract, for which you may have to pay an early termination fee.

You might also want to check to see if you currently are paying a discounted price for your package. In some cases, customers get discounts that cost less than lower-priced packages.
