Introduction

If you've had your Comcast Xfinity modem for awhile, it may be time to upgrade it, if you want to continue getting the best internet service you can out of it. Once you get your new modem, you need to know how to install it. Read on to learn how.

What You'll Need

If you install your new modem yourself, you won't be charged anything for it. If you want an Xfinity technician to install it for you, you may be assessed an installation fee.If you do not upgrade your modem, you will not be able to take advantage of Xfinity's full speed. You will not receive new security updates, leaving your equipment vulnerable to hackers. You might even experience service interruptions.

Find the best location for your new modem.

Ideally, it should be in a central location, where it is about the same distance from all of the devices that will be relying on it. Furthermore, it should be on a table or shelf and up off the floor. It should not be too near any thick walls, as they could interfere with its signal. It should also not be located too close to your washer, dryer, refrigerator, or any other appliance, as these can sometimes generate interference with your modem's signal. Of course, it also needs to be placed near a coaxial cable wall outlet and a regular power outlet.

Connect the coaxial cable that goes to your modem to an active coaxial cable outlet in your wall on one end and to your modem on the other.

It should connect to your modem's Cable or RF port.

Plug the power adapter into your modem's power cord port and then plug the other end into a regular electrical wall outlet.

Turn the power on and wait for the modem to fully power up and synchronize itself with Xfinity's network.

This should take about 5 to 10 minutes to complete. During the process, the modem's light will flash green or orange at different stages. Once the light becomes a solid green, you modem is online and is ready to be activated.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for Comcast Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
