I was reviewing my life insurance policy and noted that there was a section that I had a question about. I actually didn't know who the current beneficiary of my policy was. At one point it was my parents, and I don't know if I ever actually changed it to my spouse or not. I decided the best thing to do was just call NY Life Insurance and ask them about it.
When I first called, I was immediately greeted by an automated assistant who stated, "If you're calling in about medical leave benefits from your employee such as short or long disability or family medical leave act benefits, your call cannot be serviced by this call center. What can I help you with today?"
I responded, "Talk about my life insurance policy." The automated assistant responded, "Okay, tell me a little more about what you need. You can say things like, change my beneficiary or make a payment." It took me a second to think of what to say, but then I answered, "Review my beneficiary."
It then responded, "This is about a beneficiary right?" Once I said yes, it went on to say, "Alright to get you to the right place, please tell me your policy number one character or letter at a time. You can also say, I dont have it, or give me a minute." I didn't happen to have it handy and didn't want to go look for it so I said I didn't have it and then it asked for my social security number which I provided instead.
I was placed on hold for a brief minute, and then someone picked up who was able to talk to me about my beneficiary. It turned out I did have my spouse on there so I was able to hang up with a little peace of mind.

GetHuman does not provide call center services or customer support operations for NY Life Insurance. The two organizations are not related. GetHuman builds free tools, researches information, and shares tips and tricks from other consumers to help customers of companies like NY Life Insurance. That can include tools such as our GetHuman Phone, which allows you to call a company but skip the part where you wait on the line to get a live human rep, or talk to a company's customer service operation for you. GetHuman believes that this fills an important gap between fragmented support models, makes the customer care experience more uniform, and even answers questions that businesses and agencies are reluctant to answer (but shouldn't be) - making the customer experience less confusing for all. We continue to work on these tools to help customers like you (and ourselves!) navigate the messy phone menus, hold times, and confusion with customer service. As long as you keep sharing it with others, we'll keep improving it.
