When calling the Hawaii Division of Motor Vehicles, it's important to know which island's DMV you're calling. Each of the four largest islands of Hawaii (Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island) has its own phone number, and this phone number is only meant for callers from Oahu, or Honolulu County.
When I dialed this number, I didn't run into any hold time or automated message whatsoever. I was instantly connected to a representative and asked how she could help me.
I told her that I would be moving to Hawaii in the next month and asked her what I would need to get my Hawaii license. She asked if I was coming to Oahu, and I confirmed that I was. When I did, she told me I would need my valid out-of-state driver's license, my birth certificate or passport, my Social Security number and two forms of mail.
I asked what qualified as mail, and she said anything that had both my name and address would be acceptable, but it could not be more than 30 days old. I asked her what the cost was, and she said it was $40 for a new license, which would cover me for eight years.
I then asked how long I had after arriving on Oahu to get my new license, and she said there was no specific timetable, but she highly recommended getting it as soon as possible. She explained if my license expired, I'd need to get proof that I had been licensed in my old state mailed to me, which takes much longer in Hawaii than it does elsewhere.
She also said I would need to schedule an appointment at an office on Oahu, and she recommended doing so as soon as possible because appointments book up weeks in advance. I thanked her for her assistance, and we both hung up.
Overall, I thought this was a very good customer service experience. The lack of a hold system was a bit surprising, but given that this number is only meant to serve one island, it makes sense. The representative was courteous and professional, and I felt comfortable with her answers to all of my questions.
She was thorough with all of her answers and offered her own experiences to help me avoid potentially difficult situations, which was a welcome inclusion. If I were a genuine customer of the Hawaii DMV, I would feel very comfortable using this number to get assistance with my issue.
