Aug 15, 2023

Investing money can be a great way to build wealth, but only when you know when to buy and when to sell. If you have a stock on eToro that isn't performing the way you think it should and want to sell it, what should you do? How do you sell stocks on eToro?

Get assistance with your account by calling eToro investor support, and see below for steps to sell stocks on the platform.

Selling Your eToro Stocks

If you're ready to sell some or all of your eToro stocks, you can do so by completing the steps below:

  1. Open eToro's website on your device and log into your account.
  2. Click to open your portfolio and choose the stocks you wish to sell.
  3. Select the option to close your position to sell the stock.
  4. Use the funds to purchase a new stock on the platform, or opt to withdraw the funds to your bank account.

Opening a Sell Position

You also have the option to open a sell position on the eToro platform by doing the following:

  1. Open eToro's website and log into your account.
  2. Go to the "Open Trade" window and switch the toggle to "Sell."
  3. This will open a "buy/sell" spread and the trade will close at the "buy" price.

You'll most likely sell a stock if you feel it will stop performing and its value will decline. Selling a stock can help you avoid loss of assets if you sell before the price starts dropping. A short-sell is an agreement between you and a broker to get the stock sold at the best price possible.

Important to Know

eToro does report to the IRS; therefore, you may be taxed on your investments in one of two ways:

  1. Capital gains taxes are assessed when you sell a stock for more than the original purchase price. In short, you've gained money just by buying the stock.
  2. Income taxes are assessed when you earn new cryptocurrency on the platform based on the token's fair market value.

Understanding how to sell your stock and what costs you may incur is vital. For more information or assistance with a stock sell, call eToro investor support.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for eToro Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
