How Do I Unlink a Phone Number from My WeChat Account?
This article describes how to unlink a phone number you have linked to your WeChat account. Because there is no way to directly unlink a phone number, two different workarounds are described: changing the linked phone number and deleting your WeChat account entirely. Detailed instructions are provided for both of these options.
There is no way to simply unlink your phone number from your WeChat account, leaving it without a linked number. So if you want to unlink your phone number from your WeChat account, you are going to have to be a little creative. You can either replace the linked phone number with a new one or delete your account to get the same effect.
How to Change Your WeChat-Linked Phone Number
- Open the WeChat app.
- Tap on the Me option in the lower right corner. Your Profile menu will open.
- Tap on the Settings option, located at the bottom of the menu.
- Tap on the Account Security option.
- Tap on the Phone option.
- Tap on the Change Mobile option.
- Tap on the phone number that is currently linked to your account and replace it with a new one.
- Tap on OK.
- After you have received the verification code on the new number you have given, enter it in the space provided.
- Tap on the Submit option. Your previous linked number should now be unlinked.
If you do not receive the verification code within a few minutes of entering your new number, tap on the No Verification Code Received option. It will be resent.
How to Delete Your WeChat Account
Before you delete your account, you need to make sure that you haven't changed your password or your linked phone number in the past 2 weeks. If you have recently made these changes, trying to delete your account could cause confusion and lead to a problem with your cancellation. You also need to make sure that your have no money left owed on your account, and that you have canceled or never activated WeChatPay.
- Open the WeChat app.
- Tap on the Me option.
- Tap on the Settings option.
- Tap on the Account Security option.
- Tap on the WeChat Security Center option.
- Tap on the Account Cancellation option.
- Tap on the Request Cancellation button.
Once you have put in your request, you will be logged out of your WeChat account. After a 60 day waiting period, your account will be deleted permanently and you will no longer be able to retrieve any information from your account. During this waiting period you have the option of logging back into your account and undoing the deletion process.
