Introduction

Phone companies are always changing their tech, their prices, and their promotions, trying to entice customers away from their competitors. If you have a T-Mobile account but want to switch your account to another carrier, there are several things you must do, both with your new carrier and with T-Mobile.

What You'll Need

Port Out Protection is a free service that T-Mobile offer to any customer with Metro by T-Mobile, T-Mobile Prepaid, T-Mobile Postpaid, or T-Mobile for Business. It is meant to protect your account by blocking unauthorized people from switching your account to another carrier and gaining control over it. This feature will prevent you from switching your account yourself, though, so you will need to turn it off before you can make the switch. To switch it off, you must be the primary account holder. Even authorized users of the account are not allowed to do this.

You can only generate a temporary port out PIN from your mobile device. You cannot do it from a desktop or laptop computer.

If you have Port Out Protection, log in to your T-Mobile account.

If you do not have it, skip to step 3.

Go to the T-Mobile Manage Port Out Protection page and switch off the service.

If you want to get your temporary port out PIN from the T-Mobile site, log in to your T-Mobile account from the T-Mobile page, using your mobile device, while connected to the T-Mobile network.

It's located in the menu bar.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for T-Mobile Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
