Did you forget the login credentials for your Social Security account? Don't worry, you can easily recover them as long as you still have access to the email address associated with your online account. Do note that you can no longer use the Social Security username sign-in option on the official website. To log in or reset your password, you'll have to use either Login.gov or ID.me. Having trouble signing in to your account? Read this guide for the step-by-step instructions on how to reset your password.

Go to the Sign In Page

Use this link. Enter the email address associated with your Social Security online account and click Continue.

Click Forgot Password

Type in your email address again and click Continue. Then, check your email address for the password reset link. If you can't find the password reset email in your inbox, check your spam folder. For Gmail users, you may also want to check the Promotions tab.

Note: You may be asked to enter a security code sent to your email to be able to reset your password.

Click Reset Password

Note that the password reset link expires in 15 minutes. As soon as you get the link, we recommend changing your password immediately.

When clicking Reset Password, you will be taken to a new page that will let you create a new password. Use a unique password, preferably a combination of of special characters, numbers and letters to better protect your account. Avoid using names or special dates; instead, use longer names that aren't associated with you. Type in your new password and click Continue.

Wait for the message that says your password was successfully changed. Then, go back to the sign-in page and enter your new password. If you're using Login.gov and forgot the password to your Social Security online account, proceed to the next step.

Go to the Sign In Page and Click Forgot Your Password

Go to https://login.gov to reset your password.

Enter Your Email Address

Type in your email address in the box and click Continue.

If you've forgotten the username or email address associated with your Social Security account, we recommend checking your email for any emails from the SSA. Try using this email address for the password reset link. Do the same for the ID.Me account as well (only if you forget the username or email address).

Once you get the password reset link, change your password immediately, and ensure your new password is strong and unique. If you encounter any issues with regard to resetting your password, feel free to also contact Social Security's 1-800 number, available from 8 am to 7 pm EST.

Conclusion

Note that you can get locked out when you type in the incorrect password too many times. If you're unsure whether it's the correct password, we recommend resetting it to avoid account lockouts. We also recommend contacting SSA or updating your account if you have a new phone number, to avoid other issues with your account. Keep your password secure and never share it with anyone you don't trust. If possible, consider using a Password Manager to help you better manage your passwords. Are you still having issues? Don't hesitate to contact Social Security Customer Support.

Why does GetHuman Write How-to Guides for Social Security Problems?

GetHuman has been working for over 10 years on sourcing information about big organizations like Comcast in order to help customers resolve customer service issues faster. We started with contact information and fastest ways to reach a human at big companies. Particularly ones with slow or complicated IVR or phone menu systems. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our What do I do if my Xfinity TV or internet is out? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible. If you appreciated this guide, please share it with your favorite people. Our free information and tools is powered by you, the customer. The more people that use it, the better it gets.
