You can sell options on your Schwab account, but you should follow a specific procedure. The steps are below:

1. Log In to Your Charles Schwab Account

You need a Charles Schwab account to sell options on the website. To begin, log in to your Charles Schwab account.

Verify your identity before selling options on Charles Schwab: You will enter your personal information, such as your Social Security number, birth date, driver's license or state identification card number and proof of residence documentation.

2. Go to the Trade Tab

To execute an options trade, go to the Trade tab and select Option Trade.

The following screen will appear:

  • You can see all of your options available for sale.
  • The options with a green arrow next to them are currently available for sale.
  • The number in brackets indicates how many contracts remain before they expire.

3. Enter the Ticker Symbol

Entering the ticker symbol is one step to selling options. The ticker symbol is a unique identifier for each stock, just like a person's name or Social Security number. Every company has an individual ticker symbol that you can use to identify it in trade transactions.

For example, if you wanted to sell shares of Apple Inc., your Charles Schwab account would need the correct symbol for this transaction: AAPL (Apple).

4. Click on the Option You Want To Sell

Once you select the stock and option, click on Sell under Call Options or Put Options, depending on which option you want to sell. Note that you can only sell an option if it is in the money and has at least one day left until expiration.

5. Preview Order

The next step is to enter the relevant information, including the number of contracts you want to sell and the price at which you want to sell them. Ensure you fill in both fields before proceeding.

Then click on Preview Order.

6. Place Order

Once you're satisfied with your order and ready to submit it, click the Place Order button.

The next step is a confirmation screen that shows your order details and asks if you want to proceed with placing this trade.

If everything looks correct, click Place My Trade. If not, make any necessary changes on this page before proceeding by hitting Refresh.
