How Do I Report Someone on WordPress?

As a WordPress user, you want a site that is friendly and safe. Therefore, if you find a site on the platform that is abusive, spam or otherwise a violation of the terms and agreements, you can report it by either logging into your own account, or you can submit a form without logging in. If the site does violate community standards, it can be removed from WordPress providing it is not a self-hosting site and was instead built using Automattic.

WordPress is a blog and website platform for individuals and businesses to reach larger audiences and promote their ideas, but sometimes the content can violate community guidelines. How do you report someone on WordPress who has posted content or has a site that violates certain rules and regulations? You can learn more about WordPress and how to build your own site by contacting customer support here, and you can follow the steps below to report content that is offensive or abusive.

Guidelines for Reporting

WordPress supports free speech and realizes that just because someone doesn't like content doesn't necessarily mean it violates standards. It does, however, have certain guidelines that prohibit the following types of content:

  • Spam content
  • Content that is not suitable for all audiences, more adult oriented
  • Content that is abusive
  • Any content that promotes someone harming themselves or committing suicide
  • Copyright infringement

Additionally, WordPress can only exercise control over sites that use WordPress' Automattic program. If it is a self-hosted site powered by WordPress, it cannot remove the site from the platform.

If you come across WordPress content that meets any of these criteria, you can report the site by being logged into your account or submitting a form without logging in.

Logged In Reporting

If you are logged into your account and you see another site that violates community standards, you can submit a report form by clicking the three dots at the bottom of the screen beside the "Follow" link. This will pull up the report menu, and you can choose from the list how the content violates standards. Choose the one that best matches the page, and hit "Submit."

Reporting While Not Logged In

If you do not wish to log into your WordPress account, you can still report an Automattic built site by doing the following:

  1. Open WordPress' website in your browser.
  2. Under community at the bottom of the page, click on "WordPress.com Support."
  3. Type, "Report a site" in the search bar.
  4. Click on "Report a Site" at the top of the search results.
  5. Scroll to the link in the sentence, "If you're not a logged in WordPress.com user please use the form found here."
  6. Enter your email address.
  7. Key in the full URL of the website you are reporting.
  8. Select the reason for the report.
  9. Click "Continue" to complete the report.

WordPress will review your report, and if it does violate community standards and was built using Automattic, it will be removed within one to two business days. WordPress wants to allow individuals to share ideas and products in a safe, friendly environment. When sites create a less suitable platform, WordPress will take action. Or companies that have self-serve help forums instead of a customer service department. From there, we realized that consumers still needed more detailed help solving the most common problems, so we expanded to this set of guides, which grows every day. And if you spot any issues with our How Do I Report Someone on WordPress? guide, please let us know by sending us feedback. We want to be as helpful as possible.
