The process for changing your WordPress domain name depends on where you got the domain and how long you have owned it.

No domains can be directly edited, but the process for updating your site's domain is relatively simple. Here's how to get started.

Changing Your Domain Purchased From WordPress

WordPress sells domains through its paid plans. When you register a new domain from WordPress, you have 96 hours to cancel and request a refund. If you just purchased your domain, you have to contact WordPress support to cancel it. Then you can register a new domain for your site.

If it's too late for a refund, you will have to purchase a new domain.

  • On your logged-in account, go to Upgrades, then Domains
  • Select Add Domain to this site
  • After registering a new domain, go to Upgrades, then Domains again
  • Click the menu option by your new domain and choose make primary address

You can keep your original domain or cancel it.

Changing Your Domain Registered With Another Provider

You can connect domains from other providers to your WordPress site. If that's what you did, you have to register a new domain and connect it to your site. Canceling your original domain depends on what provider you're using.

You need a WordPress paid subscription to connect a third-party domain. Connecting a domain you already own varies depending on your provider. However, getting started always involves the same steps.

  • On WordPress, go to Upgrades, then Domains
  • Choose Add a domain
  • Select Use a domain I own
  • Enter your domain name and click Next

From here, you can either transfer your domain to WordPress or keep it with your current provider. If you keep your current provider, you will have to contact your registrar to coordinate the change.

There is a fee to transfer your domain to WordPress. Domains have to be 60 days old to transfer, and it may take up to a week to complete the process. When the transfer is complete, you can manage all aspects of your domain via your WordPress account.
