Dropbox is a file hosting platform. This American company was founded in September 2008 and its headquarters are in San Francisco. The services offered include cloud storage, personal clouds, file synchronization, and client software. There is a free account with minimal storage. Or, individuals can choose to purchase Dropbox subscriptions. The price varies depending on storage sizes. Clients can choose to pay monthly or annually (a discount is offered for annual payments).

If you are no longer finding Dropbox useful or have chosen to move onto a new cloud servicing site, you can cancel your Dropbox account anytime. Keep reading for the instructions on how to cancel.

Cancel a Paid Dropbox Subscription Online

  1. Go to www.dropbox.com

  2. In the top right corner, select 'Sign In.'

  3. You can sign in to your account with your email address and password. Or, you can sign in using your Google account. Note if you're using a business plan, only the team admin can cancel the plan.

  4. Click on your profile icon in the top right corner of the screen. Select 'Settings.'

  5. Select the 'Plan' tab at the top of the menu bar.

  6. Scroll to the bottom and select 'Cancel Plan.'

  7. Scroll again to the bottom and click, 'I still want to downgrade.'

  8. Select a reason why you want to cancel. The options are:

    • I don't need the extra space

    • I don't need the service anymore

    • I found something better

    • Technical issues

    • Ease of use issues

    • Too expensive

    • Missing features

    • Other

  9. Scroll down and select 'I still want to downgrade.'

  10. You'll receive an email confirming your cancellation.

  11. Your account will downgrade to a free Dropbox account at the end of the billing cycle. Note if you didn't cancel before your new billing cycle, you can be charged for the upcoming month. There may be applicable cancellation fees for canceling an annual plan.

  12. You can confirm your cancellation went through by logging into your account. Under the 'Plan' section, there will be a statement that says, 'Your Dropbox account will downgrade to Dropbox Basic on [date].'

Cancel a Free Dropbox Account Online

  1. Go to www.dropbox.com

  2. In the top right corner, select 'Sign In.'

  3. You can sign in to your account with your email address and password. Or, you can sign in using your Google account.

  4. Click on your profile icon in the top right corner of the screen. Select 'Settings.'

  5. Select the 'General' tab at the top of the menu bar.

  6. Scroll to the bottom and click on 'Delete Account.'

  7. You will be redirected to a new page where you have to re-enter your password.

  8. Additionally, you need to select a reason for leaving. Choose the one that most applies to your situation. The options are:

    • I don't need the extra space

    • I don't need the service anymore

    • I found something better

    • Technical issues

    • Ease of use issues

    • Too expensive

    • Missing features

    • Other

  9. You can add more details in a text box if you wish.

  10. Select 'Permanently Delete.'

  11. You will receive an email confirmation that your account has been deleted. Note that when you delete your Dropbox account, all of your data and files will be gone forever. You may wish to download all your files before deleting your account.
