How Do I Dispute a Charge with American Express?
You’ll need to go to the American Express website and click on the Login button in the top right corner.
You will be prompted to enter your User ID and Password. If you’ve forgotten them, you can click on the Forgot User ID or Password and follow the instructions to retrieve or reset them. To dispute a charge on your credit card, make sure you choose “Cards and Banking” under Account Type.
Once you are logged into the site. Look under Accounts for your American Express card and click on it. You will see a list of the charges since your last statement. Review the charges and find the one you want to dispute. If it’s not listed, you will need to click View All to see a longer list. This will show you charges from the past 30 days. Find the charge you wish to dispute and click on it to expand. This will show details about the charge. Click on Dispute this Charge to continue.
American Express will notify you that they expect you to contact the merchant directly before opening a dispute. If you wish to submit a dispute, click Continue.
Next, you will want to check the option that best describes the reason for your dispute. Make your selection and click Continue again.
You may then be asked follow-up questions. For example, if you choose “I don’t agree with the charge amount,” you will be asked whether you were overcharged or the billing currency or exchange rate was incorrect. Choose the appropriate response and click Continue again.
Enter the amount of the incorrect charge and click Continue.
Before moving on, American Express will ask you whether you made any attempt to contact and resolve the charge directly.
If you did contact the merchant, you will be asked to provide the date of the contact.

Finally, provide the specific reason for your dispute and any relevant details.
Add documentation you have that backs up your claim, such as a receipt, agreement, proof of payment, or cancellation, etc. If so, you will be prompted to upload a copy.
At this point, you can either go back and review your answers or click “Submit Dispute” to finalize it.
That’s it. You’ve now submitted your dispute. During the dispute, you are not responsible for paying the amount in dispute and will not accrue any interest charges associated with that amount. American Express will attempt to contact the merchant to get their side of the story before making a determination. If the merchant does not respond within a reasonable time frame or provide the requested information, your account will be credited. American Express will email you the status of the claim periodically, including a final resolution.
