Calling MoneyGram is a rather convoluted experience, as the system is set up to allow you to send a money order over the phone without having to visit a MoneyGram location. However, this isn't a good thing, because the system takes you through several detailed steps and can lead you to a representative who has no idea how to help you.

When I called, I was asked the reason I was calling and said send, as I wanted to find out the cost of a money order. Upon saying send, I was given a long speech asking me to make sure that I knew the person I was sending the money to and making sure I did not fall for any scams. I was then asked the country I would send to and said United States. I was next asked the state and said Florida, and asked to provide the amount I wanted to send.

Not wanting to risk losing a large amount of money if something went wrong, I said that I wanted to send $1.00. The system then took me to a representative and told me that by continuing, I was consenting to having my call recorded. If I did not want the call recorded, I could visit a MoneyGram agent in person.

That would have been more productive, because I didn't get an answer out of the representative. I said I was not ready to send a money order yet, but I wanted to know how much a money order from MoneyGram would cost. She said that she would look that up, then came back and said she could not provide that information and I'd need to call a different number.

Maybe this number works for transactions, but it wasn't effective for getting information. I would not use it in the future.
