How do I get through the phone menu to a live person?
Consider using our free service that calls and talks to customer service for you, then sends you a report. Or use our free service that waits on hold and tells you when a human rep is on the line. But if those options don't appeal to you, our team has also documented the phone menu for TD Ameritrade below.
Our AI powered phone can dial, navigate the phone menu, wait on hold, and even talk to customer service for you, for free. You don't even need to learn about the path through the various phone options.
That same, free GetHuman Phone can call and navigate the menus and wait on hold for you, but you can opt to do all the talking. We notify you when a rep is on the line and ready to talk, so no need to worry about changing menu options and weaving your way through the maze.
Of course, we completely understand if you prefer to do all the dialing, waiting, and talking yourself. All of these free tools are optional.

What are the hours and when should I call?
TD Ameritrade operates the call center for this 800-669-3900 phone number 24 hours, 7 days. The short answer is that you should call on a Friday. This observation and the following section are based on analysis of a sample set of 209 calls made in the last 90 days using our free, web-based phone (see above).
When you use our free AI-powered phone to call and talk, wait on hold, or navigate for you, it will automatically wait until the TD Ameritrade call center opens before trying to call. It will ask your permission before it places the call, so you can also further delay that scheduled call until you are ready. But that means you can "set it and forget it" ahead of time.
An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this TD Ameritrade phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like TD Ameritrade staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.
The least busy time to call
The least busy day to call TD Ameritrade is Sunday. The most busy day to call is Wednesday, which averages 173% more phone calls by comparison.Again, this is based on a sample of 209 calls made with our AI-powered, web-based phone in the last 90 days.

When I called this number, an automated menu system answered and immediately asked me to press 9 for information on when tax documents would be sent or to stay on the line for anything else. After waiting a few seconds, it gave me three options: help with existing accounts, opening or transferring a new account, or a button to press if I knew the extension of the person I was trying to reach. I went with the first option. If you do need information about receiving tax documents, the recording doesn't give specific dates; it tells you where to find them through your online account.
For help with an existing account, the system asks for your nine-digit account number. If you don't know it, you can enter your social security number instead. I accidentally mistyped mine and discovered that you can enter any nine-digit number and it will still take you to the next menu. This one has several different options. In order, they are: quotes, help with online account login, place a trade, general account questions, new accounts, enter an extension, repeat the menu, or hold for a customer service representative. As far as I can tell, all of the options except the first take you straight to a rep. Choosing "new account" from the first menu does as well.
The "quotes" option allows you to say a company name or enter its ticker symbol via button presses. I always prefer button presses to speaking, but they use a system I've never seen before. Each letter is two button presses — the first is the button the letter is on, and the second for its position. It's probably the only way to keep dozens of three- and four-letter abbreviations straight. Once you enter the ticker symbol for the company of your choice, the automated voice will give you the current stock price. From there you can get more detailed information or transfer to a rep.
The rest of the menu options will get you to a customer service representative. They answered my call in less than a minute. The man greeted me with his first and last name and asked for mine. He was pleasant and professional throughout the call. I had questions about locating an old account and possibly opening a new one. He couldn't find the old account, but he tried several different methods so I was confident he wasn't overlooking it. He was patient when I explained that it could be under a different name and he checked them all at my request.
Since I didn't have an account, I wanted to create one. The rep explained how I could do so online and offered further assistance, but I decided to do it on my own. Overall it was a positive experience. However, TD Ameritrade is merging with Charles Schwab and new accounts must be opened with the latter. I don't think this line could help me with my new account; I'll need to contact Schwab instead.

Information about why customers call TD Ameritrade is extracted from issues that customers have reported to GetHuman.
Corresponding with a customer service department by email may not be your first choice, especially if your issue is urgent or time-sensitive. But email is a nearly ubiquitous form of communication, and TD Ameritrade will reply our your email.
As a last, sometimes only, resort- TD Ameritrade customer service can be accessed through their website. This can entail digging through help articles before finding a form and "being allowed" to submit a problem to their team, and rarely leads to a real-time conversation, which is why GetHuman does not recommend this unless it's the only way.
