Mississippi Motor Vehicle Division (DMV/RMV) Customer Service

When calling the Mississippi Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicle Division, it's important to remember that this department only handles the vehicle side of things, not driver's licenses. That means you're calling for help with your title, registration, insurance and similar things. But if you need driver's license help, you'll call a different number.

When you dial, you're given a brief menu and told to hold for the next available representative. In my case, that didn't take long at all, as I was connected within three minutes to a male voice introducing himself as James.

I told James that I was moving to Mississippi and wanted to make sure I could title and register my vehicle properly in Mississippi. James asked me what county I was in, and I said I'd be moving to Oxford and Lafayette County. He said that he'd asked because in Mississippi, everything with your vehicle registration is done at the county level rather than the state level.

With that being the case, he couldn't personally offer me any assistance, but he could give me the phone number for the Lafayette County DMV offices. He told me to call 662-234-6006 and ask for Jasmine and tell her that James had sent me her way. I thanked him for the assistance and he thanked me for calling and hung up.

Overall, I thought this was a good display of customer service, even if the phone number is somewhat limited in the service that it provides. It seems that this number functions as more of a call center for information than it does a place to get actual assistance, given how the state handles everything at the county level.

However, that makes sense for Mississippi. Given the state's rural makeup, it's highly likely that the average person isn't necessarily going to have an easy way to look up information online. By providing help in the form of a call center and not having a lengthy wait time, customers can get the assistance they need in a way that makes sense for their own individual needs.

I thought James' assistance was very good. He was quick with the information and even made a brief comment showing his familiarity with the Lafayettte County DMV by pulling out the phone number and pointing out exactly who I would be able to ask for help. If the call had gone on longer, I think he likely would have been able to go into greater detail, as he seemed knowledgeable and professional.

If you're using this phone number to try to handle DMV-related business, you're probably not going to have a lot of success. But if you're in need of the number to get connected to your local DMV and can't or don't want to look it up online, this is a good resource. I'd use it if I needed basic help with a DMV-related concern, but I likely wouldn't try to use it beyond that.
