An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this General Motors phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like General Motors staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.

My Experience Calling 800-462-8782

Jan 11, 2024

Calling General Motors was a very pleasant experience, as I was able to get assistance in a friendly, professional manner almost immediately. When I called GM, I was first taken to the automated system, where I was asked the purpose of my call.

I said that I wanted to find a dealership in my area, and I was asked to provide the ZIP Code that I was using. I offered it, and the system said I would be connected to someone as soon as possible. The system added that all representatives were busy at the moment, and it might take some time before I got connected to someone.

However, this proved an exaggeration; I was connected with Scott in a matter of two minutes. Scott asked for my first and last name, as well as my phone number, so he could get back in touch with me if I got disconnected. I provided both, and he then asked for the purpose of my call.

I told him I wanted to find a GM dealer in my area, and he said he could definitely help with that. He asked what car I had, and I told him I drove a Toyota and was looking for my next vehicle. He said he understood and asked for my ZIP Code so that he could find dealers near me.

I provided the ZIP Code again, and he told me it would be a minute or two before his database could update me as to which dealers were closest to me. He said that he had found three dealers within 10 miles of my ZIP Code and gave me the name and city of each of them. He then added that he could also provide the details about them, including their address, phone number and hours of operation.

I said that would be great, and he proceeded to give me the information for both Cutter Chevrolet and JN Chevy, both of which were within five miles of me. He did warn me that GM's database hadn't been updated recently, so there was a chance that the phone numbers he was giving me might not be accurate. However, he said that if I searched the addresses online, I would be able to find their current phone numbers.

Once I'd written down all the information, he asked if there was anything else he could do for me. I said no and thanked him again for his time. He wished me a pleasant day, and we ended the call.

Other than GM needing to update its database, this was an exemplary call. Scott spoke clearly and got across a tone of knowledge, friendliness and professionalism. I felt relaxed and able to get the information I needed without any issues. The one problem was that GM's database is out of date, as one of the numbers I got from Scott did not match when I searched online.

However, that error is correctible. Based on the service I received, I would absolutely use this number if needed.
