Calling BJ's Wholesale Club seems to be more of a place to get information, regardless of the reason for your call. When I called looking for information about BJ's membership programs, I was first taken to a menu where I could choose English or Spanish. Once I'd made that selection, I was asked if I needed help with the BJ's MasterCard. If I didn't need assistance with that, I was then taken to the rest of the automated menu.
The remainder of the menu included things like getting a link to a virtual agent, checking order status and assistance with recent membership and renewals. I then asked the system for information about becoming a member. It took two attempts for the system to recognize what I was saying, but it eventually brought me over to the membership section and explained that I could get information on becoming a member from the BJ's website.
The system went on to say that it was excited about welcoming me to the BJ's family, but it never went beyond telling me that I could find all of the information about becoming a member on the BJ's website. Once it had provided me with the link to BJ's website twice, it told me that it would be ready to assist me with another question, or I could hang up if I didn't have anything else.
After hanging up, I decided to call back to see if going the credit card route would be more productive. Taking that route wasn't any more effective and actually provided less help. Instead of taking me to a live representative, it said that it was going to transfer me over to Capital One to get assistance with my card. On a third option, I decided to check an order status, and the system told me I would need to provide my 11-digit membership number to proceed. With no real options to talk to a live person at that point, I opted to hang up for the second time and end the call.
Searching this number does confirm that it's a number that BJ's advertises as opposed to one that you have to search for, which makes it puzzling why there's no real way to talk to a live person unless you already have a membership card. The number even lists hours of operation, something that's only necessary if you have live representatives working the phones. Unless this is an advertised perk of being a BJ's member, this doesn't seem to be a very good way to welcome in people to the BJ's family.
Overall, I wasn't very impressed with calling this number. The automated system does serve a purpose as far as getting information, but this number is advertised with specific hours, which should allow you to speak to a live person. As it doesn't, I would not be inclined to use this number based on this phone call.
