Can you forward this to the History channel?*I am writing in regards to your program "Edwards Air Force Base" ( S** - E**) that airs occasionally.**Since your site is named the "History" channel I ask you, in the name of accuracy, to consider rewriting parts of this presentation, as parts of it are not history and erroneous.**Specifically the segments regarding Charles Yeager and "breaking the sound barrier". Here are the facts and some background material. I would hope, as historians, you will read this material, do some research on your own, and update your factually inaccurate account.**During WWII V* rockets used by Germany flew at speeds of **** miles per hour. There was no “barrier” and the aviation engineers of the ****s knew it, but it made good press. There was never any doubt the XS-* could fly and be controlled faster than sound.*It is quite clear and well documented that Chuck Yeager was not the "first one to fly faster than sound". He was the first to fly faster than sound in controlled, level supersonic flight. A huge difference.*To the detriment of his illustrious career as a WWII fighter pilot and subsequent test pilot flights, he has made a career out of being the “first man to fly faster than the speed of sound” and for “breaking the sound barrier”. He was neither! Indeed, he rose to the rank of Brigadier General, endorsed products, worked the lecture circuit, appeared at air shows and gave interviews, all based on this event in ****.*At the time of his flight, pilots had already flown faster than sound. A flight on October *, **** by George Welch, a North American test pilot, exceeded the speed of sound and created the signature double sonic booms, breaking windows at Poncho Barnes’ Happy Bottom Riding Club. Welsh repeated this event on the morning of the **th prior to Yeager’s flight. The account of both of Welch’s flights is complete with eye-witnesses, researched historical accounts and the pilot’s statement.*In his book “Aces Wild: The Race for Mach *” (Scholarly Resources Inc. Wilmington, Del., ****), Al Blackburn writes that George Welch first breached the sound barrier on October *st , **** in North American’s XP-** Saber. It seems Welch simply wanted to know what supersonic flight was like and when he found out he was content to leave the publicity up to Yeager. Incidentally, Blackburn was also an experimental test pilot.*In ****, Bell and the Army Air Corp (which two weeks after Yeager’s flight became the US Air Force), had spent millions of dollars and years preparing and could not afford the embarrassment of a production line fighter beating them to the punch and were not about to have it diminished and possibly have additional funding pulled.*It is interesting to note that the previously mentioned author, Al Blackburn, maintains that a record on the Muroc radar theodolite, of the two flights Welch made on November **, ****, indicated supersonic flights, noted that ** minutes before the X-* broke the record, a sonic boom was heard over the desert, centered on the Happy Bottom Riding Club. That is proof positive!*Since the flying community at Edward’s was like one big family, with Pancho Barnes’ ranch as their unofficial meeting place, there can be no doubt that the Air Force brass, the Bell Company executives and Yeager himself knew his flight was not the first to fly faster than the speed of sound. Granted, Welch’s was not in level flight as was the XS-*, but Yeager’s claim to fame has always been that he was the first “to fly faster than sound” and “the first to break the sound barrier”. He was neither!*I feel he has knowingly lived this lie from which he has profited quite handsomely at the expense of history, George Welch and others. In his autobiography in **** Yeager finishes his description of the event with: “And so I was a hero this day”. *Through the decades I have met several early aviation pioneers and none has ever been as self serving and egotistical as Yeager.*How much longer is this misinformation about "breaking the sound barrier" going to continue? Please don't help to perpetuate it. You have a duty as historians to correct the record.* I realize that correcting decades of misinformation is almost impossible. A lie told often enough eventually becomes fact. Almost every issue of aviation magazines and most newspaper articles with an aviation theme contain some reference to this folklore which further ingrains it in the public’s memory.*This letter in no way is meant to diminish Yeager's standing as a courageous test pilot and a WWII fighter pilot ace, but rather, to correct history and give credit where credit is due. Yeager has always had problems with the facts. Captain Tom Collin's story in the **** issue of “TEST FLYING AT OLD WRIGHT FIELD” concerning the true story of the faulty oxygen mask (see Yeager’s autobiography) is only one case in point. There are many other examples of his arrogance and stretching the truth. In reading through my home library of books and magazines I find many.
