After it collects enough information, it will either offer you a policy or reject you for reckless driving. If you are accepted, you will get a quote, which is usually better than other insurance estimates. Even some bad drivers can get better rates than what other insurance companies provide.

The following are just a few things you can do during the test drive to get the cheapest rates possible with Root.

  1. Only drive when you absolutely have to during your 30-day test. How much you drive is a major factor in determining your auto insurance rates. The more you drive, the more risk you are taking of having an accident.
  2. Always stay below the speed limit. Speeding is probably the biggest determiner of your rates, since those who speed are considered reckless drivers.
  3. Stay far behind the car in front of you so you won't have to slam on your brakes if they come to a sudden stop or slow down fast.
  4. Take turns slowly and with extra care not to turn too sharply. Many drivers make the mistake of taking turns too fast then have to make a sharp turn. This can get you noted as a reckless driver and increase your rates.

    6. Drive nice and smoothly. The app can pick up if you are swaying all over the place or hitting your breaks every minute, which can only mean you are driving too close to the car in front of you.
